Directions, not a map and a wish
Wayfinding is the work of getting one person from where they are to where they need to be. Indoors, that is a solved problem with signs and floor plans. Outdoors, across a hundred acres of campground or a school campus with nine buildings, it mostly is not solved at all.
What outdoor wayfinding actually has to do
A visitor standing in your parking lot has one question, and it is never "where is everything." It is "how do I get to that one specific place." Answering it means four things at once: knowing where they are, knowing where they want to go, knowing which paths connect the two, and telling them the next move in a form they can act on while walking.
A map gives them the second thing and half of the first. That is why people still stop staff members to ask.
Why signage keeps failing outdoors
- Signs live at decision points you predicted. Visitors get lost at the ones you did not.
- Signs cannot answer a specific question. An arrow to "Cabins 1 to 40" does not help the guest looking for cabin 27.
- Signs go stale. A path closes, a building gets renamed, and the sign is still confidently wrong for two seasons.
- Signs say nothing about whether a route is passable for you. Nothing on a post mentions the four steps halfway along it.
- Signs are expensive to change. Which is precisely why nobody changes them.
Why a virtual tour is not wayfinding either
Most 360 tours are a slideshow with a floor plan attached. You click a hotspot, you arrive somewhere else, and the software has no opinion about how the two places relate. It is a lovely way to look at a property and a useless way to get across one.
The distinction is whether the software knows the paths. If it only knows which images link to which other images, it can show you around. It cannot route you.
A tour shows you a place. Wayfinding gets you to a place. The difference is whether the software understands the ground between two points, or only the pictures at each end.
Four things that turn a tour into wayfinding

What it takes to build one
Less than people expect. The whole job is a walk with a camera and an afternoon of drawing lines.
- Plan the walk. Mark every spot that needs a photo, so nothing is missed and nobody makes the drive twice.
- Walk it with a 360 camera. A camera that records its own position places your photos on the map for you. One that does not can still be used, the points are just placed by hand.
- Draw the paths. Connect the points the way a person actually walks them, and mark the connections that have steps.
- Publish. One link, a QR code for each point, and an embed for your own website.
Common questions
Is this the same thing as indoor wayfinding software?
No. Indoor systems are built around floor plans, beacons and building interiors. This is built for outdoor ground: paths, distances, terrain and the connections between places you can photograph while walking.
Does a visitor need to install an app?
No. It opens in the browser on the phone they already have, from a link or a QR code.
Do I need a special camera?
Any 360 camera works. Cameras that record their own position save time because the photos place themselves on the map. Without that, points are placed by hand, which is slower but perfectly workable.
What happens when the property changes?
Edit the tour and the change is live for everyone immediately. There is nothing to reprint and no sign to reorder.
Can it live on our existing website?
Yes. It embeds in a page on your own site, and it also works as a standalone link for email and social posts.
